Controversial former Rangers chairman Sir David Murray is considering a surprise move to re-invest in the club, according to the Express.

The newspaper claim that Murray is considering two options to return as a shareholder in the Light Blues, after he stepped down and sold out for £1 to Craig Whyte in 2011.

The Express report that Murray may either try to buy out existing shareholders or attempt to get involved in the club’s upcoming issue of shares, so long as he is given permission to do so by the board.

The share issue is to take place soon, but involvement will be restricted to current shareholders and preferred buyers, and it is unclear if Murray will be one of those.

It is said that current chairman Dave King may be reluctant to allow Murray to invest in the club again, with the two sharing a frosty relationship.

Whether Murray is successful in his bid to re-invest in the club is reportedly to come down to the amount he is to cough up.

Murray’s departure from the club was controversial, and many fans blame him for their troubles after he sold out to Whyte in 2011.

Since then, his interests have skyrocketed, and he is now back on Scotland’s rich list with an estimated fortune of £150million.

OPINION

It will be interesting to see whether King allows Murray to become involved in the upcoming share issue. That would look unlikely after King lost millions during his initial investment in the club under Murray, with the pair sharing a strained relationship since then. However, if Murray commits to investing a significant amount into the club, then it is possible that King will welcome him back as a shareholder. One thing is for sure, if that does happen then there will be a large section of unhappy fans, who will no doubt let the club know about their feelings.
