Northern Ireland boss Michael O’Neill has held talks with Rangers midfielder Sean Goss over a switch of international allegiance, according to the Belfast Telegraph.

The newspaper report that German-born Goss qualifies for his native England as well as Northern Ireland, through his grandparents.

The Telegraph claim that O’Neill is now attempting to persuade Goss to commit to playing international football for Northern Ireland after his promising start to life in Glasgow with Rangers.

It is said that O’Neill is desperate to freshen up his squad after their failure to qualify for the World Cup through the play-offs, and 22-year-old Goss is his latest target.

If Goss agrees, then he may be called up for the nation’s friendly match against South Korea at the end of the month, as well as the end of season tour to Central America.

Goss has been in brilliant form for Rangers since his January loan move from QPR, forming a brilliant midfield partnership with fellow new signing Greg Docherty.

OPINION

Committing to Northern Ireland would seem like a good choice for Goss. While he is undoubtedly talented, the young midfielder is yet to show that he has the quality to play for England. If he committed to Northern Ireland however there is the potential for the 22-year-old to have a fulfilling international career. Playing under O’Neill is also a big draw at the moment, and all in all it looks the right move.
