Matt Le Tissier has stated that Tottenham must build a stronger squad following their Champions League exit and claimed that they should upgrade on centre-forward Fernando Llorente.

The 33-year-old is currently the club’s second-choice striker behind talisman Harry Kane and joined Spurs in the summer.

However, the Spaniard has failed to provide much competition and has scored just five goals in 28 appearances this season.

Meanwhile, England international Kane has been in prolific goalscoring form and has netted 35 times in his 38 appearances.

Sky Sports pundit Le Tissier insists that the North London club need to improve the options in their squad after their exit from the Champions League last 16 at the hands of Italian giants Juventus.

“A little more strength in depth is still required because their first 11 is as good as anybody’s,” Le Tissier said on Sky Sports’ website.

“I think somebody who can give Kane a rest with higher quality than Fernando Llorente is key, but finding somebody worth their salt and willing to play second fiddle to Kane is difficult.”

OPINION

Spurs certainly have a few weak areas in their squad and finding an upgrade on Llorente should be a priority for the summer. Kane has proven this campaign that he is a world-class striker and he can be relied upon most weeks to lead the line. However, Mauricio Pochettino needs options in his squad and a talented group of players that can compete on all fronts. Llorente does offer Spurs something different with his physical presence, but he is well past the peak of his career and doesn’t have the quality to put Kane under pressure for his starting position.
