Liverpool youth star Rhian Brewster is set to be promoted to the first-team next season in a huge move from manager Jurgen Klopp, according to The Times.

The newspaper report that Klopp sees the 17-year-old as a real option up front for the team next season after his impressive form for the development sides this season.

The Times report that Brewster is currently recovering from surgery on his knee and ankle, and Klopp personally insisted he complete his rehabilitation at Melwood, rather than the academy in Kirkby.

It is said that Brewster remains on a scholar contract at the club despite being eligible for a professional deal, and he is expected to sign a long-term deal when he turns 18 on the 1st of April.

The striker has six goals in 15 games for the Under-23s this season, and was the tournament’s top scorer when the England Under-17s won the World Cup last summer.

OPINION

This would be a bold move from Klopp. Brewster is undoubtedly a talented young player, but being yet to turn 18 is still so raw. However, it is looking as though there will be space in the squad for a new striker, with Daniel Sturridge and Danny Ings both likely to move on this summer, as is on-loan Divock Origi. It would be a massive step up for Brewster, but players such as Harry Kane at Tottenham prove that it is one that can be made by the right player.
