Liverpool should join race for Alderweireld

Liverpool should seriously consider moving for Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld in the summer as they could be destined for the Premier League title if they signed him.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have the attacking quality to challenge any team in Europe, with the dynamic trio of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane in scinitalling form.

The Reds have always been let down defensively in recent years and with a world-class back four they could even surpass Manchester City for the league title in the future.

Virgil van Dijk has arrived at Anfield as a brilliant defender, but the team are perhaps still one centre-back short as Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip are prone to a mistake.

The Times report that Spurs could sell their defender Alderweireld in the summer amid a contract despite where they are refusing to hand him the £150,000-a-week deal that he seeks.

It is understood that the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Real Madrid are monitoring the 28-year-old’s situation.

However, Liverpool should jump to the front of the queue for his signature and splash out to bring him to the club.

Alderweireld is a defensive genius that is renowned for his exceptional tactical awareness and his quality in possession.

The Belgium international has been the most consistent defender in the Premier League in the last few years and could be the final piece of the jigsaw for Klopp.

A potential Alderweireld-Van Dijk combination could prove to be impossible to breakdown and lay the perfect platform to allow the attackers to flourish.

The Reds will already welcome defensive midfielder Naby Keita to their team from RB Leipzig in the summer and Alderweireld could finally get Liverpool over the line for their first Premier League title given his experience and leadership.
