Josh Windass has revealed that there was no malice in his celebration that saw him shush Rangers fans during the 2-0 victory over Partick Thistle.

The 24-year-old attacking midfielder scored a wonderful goal against Partick Thistle to open the scoring in the 39th minute of the game on Tuesday, but his celebration caused for him to receive negative attention.

Windass ran towards Rangers fans and shush them after scoring his goal, and this appeared to be a response to the criticism he received on social media for his performance against Hibernian.

However, the 24-year-old insisted to Sky Sports that he didn’t mean anything by his gesture.

“There was no real reason or malice in the celebration, it was just a bit of instinct after I’d scored, it was just a little bit of frustration,” Windass told Sky Sports News.

“It was nothing to do with social media, it was just how I was playing in the game up to that point, I was a bit frustrated.

“I’ve just reacted in maybe the wrong way, but it’s what happens sometimes in football. You just go for emotion.

“I’d forgot about it straight away, it’s just other people bringing it up to me, I’ll just let them talk about it and I’ll just concentrate on myself, the player added.”

Windass has scored 10 goals and registered eight assists in the 24 appearances he has made across all competitions this season.

OPINION

Windass made a smart decision to address his celebration publicly, but his comments are baffling. The 24-year-old clearly knew his gesture would have garnered a reaction from Gers supporters, and no one is going to believe that he forgot about doing it straight away. Windass really should avoid making any future gestures of this nature and just focus on his performance. The 24-year-old has a bright future at the Light Blues and shouldn’t put that in jeopardy. Hopefully Graeme Murty will be able to put him on the right road, as the manager acted swiftly to investigate what Windass meant by his celebration following the game.
