Rangers flyer James Tavernier is expected to put pen to paper on a new long-term deal at Ibrox, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claim that talks between Tavernier and director of football Mark Allen have progressed well, and the 27-year-old is set to sign the extension soon.

The Mail report that Rangers chairman Dave King had expressed his desire to reward Tavernier with a new Ibrox deal after his outstanding displays this season, and is also keen to tie down one of the club’s biggest financial assets.

It is said that Tavernier’s new deal is expected to run until 2021, with his current contract set to expire in 2019.

The right-back reportedly attracted interest from Championship clubs Reading and Sunderland in the January transfer window.

Tavernier joined Rangers from Wigan in 2015 for a fee of around £200,000, and has gone on to make 126 appearances for the club in the period since.

OPINION

Tying Tavernier down to a new contract would be a massive coup for Rangers, with the Englishman attracting interest from some big clubs with his recent displays.  The flyer has been the club’s best player so far this season, with his rampaging runs down the wing leading to brilliant figures of five goals and seven assists. That is massively productive for a defender, and will be key to Rangers’ success going forward.
