Former Rangers ace Danny Wilson has claimed that an ‘underlying issue’ at the club was behind his January move to MLS outfit Colorado Rapids.

The 26-year-old enforcer left the Light Blues for £300,000 with just days left in the January window, with his contract at the club coming to an end at the close of the campaign.

Now, in an interview with the Scottish Sun, Wilson has opened up on his latest Ibrox exit, which comes after he left the club as a teenager to join Liverpool before a return five years later.

“I came through the academy and won everything at youth and first-team levels. I’ve played in the Champions League. I can handle what’s being said about me, but it’s your family who find it the hardest. They hear and read things about me and it hurts them. The vast majority of Rangers fans have been great with me. I’ve had many wish me all the best since it broke I was going to Colorado. I thank them all.

“Graeme Murty was great with me too, especially in the last few months. I’ve got no issue with him. He asked me to be a leader for him on and off the pitch. I felt I did that. He gave me a lot of responsibility. Whenever I spoke to him he was genuine. He wanted to keep me, but there was obviously an underlying issue at the club,” he said.

Wilson also revealed that he went to speak to Rangers legend John Greig about his situation at the club before sealing his exit towards the end of the transfer window.

“I spoke to John Greig when I was leaving, just to mark his card about my situation. I’ve known him since I was nine. He’s an absolute legend at the club. I wanted John to know the truth. He was totally understanding once he knew the situation. He’s a class man. It meant a lot to me that John was supportive,” said Wilson.

The defender had previously claimed in a separate interview with the Sun that he wanted to stay at Rangers, but his claims were dismissed by Murty, who insisted that the 26-year-old pushed for a January exit.

OPINION

And so the Wilson saga continues. Ever since the defender left Rangers in January there has been much said about his motivations for leaving. Fans were not happy that he decided to exit the club after developing into a leader at the back for the Light Blues, but then claims emerged that he had wanted to stay. Murty’s assertion that he wanted to leave seemed to clear things up, before Wilson now claims there is an ‘underlying issue at the club’. We may never get the full truth of the situation, but hopefully this bitterness ends soon and both parties can move on.
