Rangers boss Graeme Murty has rubbished former player Danny Wilson’s claims that he wanted to stay at Ibrox before a January move to MLS side Colorado Rapids.

Wilson completed a £300,000 move to the Rapids with just days remaining in the transfer window, with the 26-year-old’s contract at Rangers set to expire in the summer.

The former Liverpool enforcer claimed in the Scottish Sun this week that he wanted to remain at Rangers, but the club made a u-turn on offering him a new deal.

However, speaking to the press ahead of the Gers’ trip to Hamilton in the Premiership this Sunday, Murty has rubbished those claims.

As quoted by the Scottish Sun, he said: “I want players here who want to be here. Danny wanted to leave so we helped that happen. Those discussions [about Wilson’s potential new contract] were ongoing.

“The player didn’t want to stay. So if he doesn’t want to stay, that’s fine.”

OPINION

Wilson’s claims that the club decided to not offer him a new contract seemed strange considering how well he had been playing under Murty in recent months. The former Liverpool man had developed into a key part of the Light Blues’ defence, and it looked nailed-on that he was to be offered a new deal. When the Rapids rumours began, and then the move was confirmed, it was widely assumed that Wilson had left for money, which Murty seems to now have confirmed. Just why Wilson claims he wanted to stay is unclear, and maybe the actual truth will never be known, but the defender has not exactly helped his cause if he is found to be lying about his exit.
