West Ham stopped Domingos Quina joining Scunthorpe United on loan at the last-minute of the January window, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claim that 18-year-old had his heart set on joining the League One side as he wants to play first-team football, but the Hammers pulled the plug on the deal moments before it was about to go through on transfer deadline day.

The Daily Mail report that West Ham caused a deal to collapse as they demanded Scunthorpe United pay them a substantial loan fee in order for Quina to join them until the end of the season.

The central midfielder has featured only once for West Ham’s senior side this season, as he made a four minute cameo appearance earlier in the month against Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup.

Quina has made a total of six appearances for the Hammers first-team since joining them from Chelsea Youth system in 2016.

OPINION

West Ham really shouldn’t have stood in Quina’s way. The 18-year-old is keen to hone his craft by gaining experience, and he could have learnt a lot at Scunthorpe United during the second half of the season. While the Hammers are entitled to demand a fee for their talented youngster waiting until the deal is about go through to negotiate one is foolish. If West Ham had decided that they wanted a substantial fee for Quina’s services, they should have tried to get one earlier in the window, as there would have been plenty of teams lining up to pay for the privilege to have the midfielder at their club.
