Three things learned about Liverpool in draw v Tottenham

|

Klopp continues to look for excuses

When Mo Salah slotted his second goal of the afternoon, with the clock showing 93 minutes, Jurgen Klopp embarked on one of his trademark runs down the Liverpool touchline, arms flailing and screams aplenty. Just two minutes later, Spurs were level after being awarded a second penalty, with Virgil van Dijk kicking the back of Erik Lamela’s legs. There is an argument that Lamela was offside in the build-up, but that decision was marginal, and footage clearly shows contact between van Dijk and the Argentine. Inevitably, after the game, Klopp’s focus was on the referees, and not the fact that his team had again collapsed from a winning position. There is an inherent problem at Liverpool at the moment, with teams consistently finding the back of the net in the final 20 minutes of matches. Klopp needs to turn his attention to fixing those problems, and he will not have anything to complain about after matches. His team were seconds away from taking a five-point lead over Spurs in the race for the Champions League, and now they remain just two above them. Klopp needs to stop making excuses and instead increase his efforts to fix his side’s defensive shortcomings, which may very well cost them dearly come the end of the season.
