Belgium manager Roberto Martinez has spoken out on Toby Alderweireld’s contract situation with Tottenham Hotspur, saying he does ‘not expect problems.’

Belgium international enforcer Alderweireld is yet to sign a new deal with Spurs, who want to tie the 28-year-old down to an extended deal.

His current contract runs until the summer of 2019, and Tottenham must consider whether to sell the defender on this summer if he does not put pen to paper on a new contract.

As quoted by Belgian outlet DH, Martinez said: “I spoke with him and he’s well recovered [from his hamstring injury]. It’s good that his club gave him time to get back on track. He has some contract issues, but I do not expect problems.”

Alderweireld joined Spurs for just £11million from Atletico Madrid in 2015, and has been an integral part of the Spurs defence ever since, helping them to become one of the best back lines in the country.

Reports suggest that some of Europe’s biggest clubs are interested in Alderweireld, who seems to be holding out on signing an improved Spurs deal.

OPINION

It is not exactly clear what Martinez means when he says he does not expect problems. Does he expect Alderweireld to sign a new deal with Spurs without a further hitch? Or is he simply talking about Alderweireld with regards to Belgium, and his focus when it comes to this summer’s World Cup? Anyhow, Spurs fans will hope for a swift conclusion to the situation. Alderweireld has been simply brilliant for the club since his move two-and-a-half years ago, and to lose him now would be a massive blow for Tottenham.
