BBC pundit Jermaine Jenas was blown away with Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen after his performance in the draw against Liverpool.

The 30-year-old centre-back was one of the outstanding players on the pitch on Sunday as Spurs drew 2-2 at Anfield in the Premier League.

The north London club were on course for defeat after Mohamed Salah’s 91st minute goal, but striker Harry Kane equalised from the penalty spot even further into injury time to earn a point.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side are now a point outside the top four following the result and face bitter rivals Arsenal in their next league fixture.

Jenas decided to single out powerhouse defender Vertonghen for special praise for his display at the weekend.

“Salah still scored a world-class goal in the second half of course, but otherwise Spurs centre-half Jan Vertonghen was absolutely sensational,” Jenas told BBC Sport.

OPINION

Spurs may have conceded twice against Jurgen Klopp’s side, but Vertonghen was colossal at the back and made life very difficult for centre-forward Roberto Firmino. Davinson Sanchez really struggled to deal with the Anfield occasion, but his centre-back partner Vertonghen was very composed throughout and looked a world-class defender. He was caught once during Salah’s spectacular individual goal which any player would have found hard to stop, but is one of the most consistent players in the Spurs team. Vertonghen has had to step up in the absence of Belgian teammate Toby Alderweireld and his imminent return will see Pochettino resort to one of the world’s best centre-back combinations.
