Eliaquim Mangala made his Everton debut against Arsenal on Saturday and his performance caused fans to questioned why they had bothered to sign him.

The 26-year-old defender joined the Toffees on loan until the end of the season, after making only four Premier League starts for Manchester City this season.

Mangala joined the current league leaders in 2014 from Porto and cost them £32million, according to the BBC, after playing 95 times for the Portuguese giants.

Sam Allardyce opted to instantly put the centre-back in his side against the Gunners after signing him on Wednesday, with the Everton manager previously revealing that he signed Mangala in order for him to help the Toffees get clean sheets.

“Eliaquim’s experience in world of football at the highest level, wherever he has played, will hopefully prove invaluable to us,” said Allardyce, as quoted by Everton’s official website.

“I have been rotating the central defenders for a good while now, it is nothing new.

“I am searching for the clean sheet, which is the basic responsibility of the goalkeeper and back four.”

However Mangala’s presence at least on his debut, didn’t result in the Toffees earning a clean sheet with them instead suffering a heavy 5-1 defeat at the hands of Arsenal.

While supporters were quick to slam their manager for their’s side loss as well as many other players, Mangala’s poor contribution on his debut didn’t go unnoticed by fans.

One fan asked if the club could send him back to Manchester City, while another simply called him a mess after witnessing his performance.
