Leeds United have opened talks with Sunderland over a swap deal involving Andy Lonergan and an unnamed player – and fans have taken to Twitter to discuss who the mystery player could be.

Football Insider claim the Championship relegation strugglers made contact with Leeds about the possibility of signing number two goalkeeper Lonergan.

It is said that Elland Road bosses reportedly floated the idea of a player exchange but the identity of the player is not yet known.

Sunderland are keen to sign experienced keeper Lonergan, 34, to solve their problematic goalkeeping position as manager Chris Coleman has been left less than impressed by summer signings Robbin Ruiter and Jason Steele.

Sunderland have the second-worst defensive record in the Championship and Coleman is desperate to plug the leaks at the back.

Lonergan, a proven performer at Championship level, was signed from Wolves on a free transfer but has not played for Leeds since the 4-1 thrashing at Wolves in November.

Fans of both clubs have taken to Twitter to discuss the possibility of a swap deal with Sunderland, with many intrigued as to the identity of the unnamed Black Cats player.
