Leeds United fans have delivered mixed verdicts on Twitter to reports from Italy that they are close to signing Carpi striker Jerry Mbakogu.

Widespread report in the last 24 hours have stated that United are working on a deal to land the Nigerian centre-forward.

Sky Sports Italy correspondent Gianluca Di Marzio has reported on his personal website that the Championship giants are in the advanced stages of a deal to sign the centre-forward from the Serie B promotion hopefuls.

Di Marzio explains that Mbakogu, 25, has said “yes” to making the move to Leeds and there is a rough agreement between the two clubs of a fee of around £3.5million.

Journalists who cover the Leeds patch in the UK have emphasised United’s serious interest in the front man, with Yorkshire Evening Post correspondent Phil Hay reporting that he is regarded as a signing for the summer.

Scouts from the Yorkshire giants were present to watch Mbakogu score for the second tier Italian club in their 2-1 win against Spezia Calcio over the weekend to take his haul for the campaign to seven goals in 19 appearances.

The Nigerian has scored 38 goals in 136 Carpi matches as well as supplied 20 assists.

However, that has not impressed all of the Leeds fans who have taken to social media in the last 24 hours to react to the strong Mbakogu speculation.

Some state that he is exactly what is needed while others have been critical, pointing out that the Nigerian has no Championship experience and landing a player from the lower league overseas is not the recipe for promotion.
