Leeds United are confident of beating Cardiff City to the signing of Middlesbrough midfielder Adam Forshaw, according to a reliable journalist.

Sky Sports News’ north-east correspondent Keith Downie reported on his personal Twitter account on Wednesday that the Yorkshire giants are in talks to land the 26-year-old this month.

Downie added that Neil Warnock’s side are “keen” on Forshaw but Leeds are “confident” of winning the race for the player imminently.

Forshaw’s future at Middlesbrough is uncertain with the former Everton youngster yet to feature under new boss Tony Pulis and out of the team since 9 December.

He is contracted to Boro until the summer of 2020 and it has been reported that the asking price of the club is £2.5million, which Leeds are willing to match.

Leeds have failed to win in their last three Championship games and Thomas Christiansen has admitted his side need to bring in some fresh impetus to get them back to winning ways.

OPINION

Leeds’ recent performances have highlighted the need for a centre-forward worthy of the name, but also for a central midfield driving force who can provide the link between defence and attack. Forshaw is a neat and tidy continuity player whose style bears his Everton heritage, and clearly is not to the liking of Pulis, who likes his midfielders to be physical and organised rather than especially technically gifted. Part of Forshaw’s appeal is that he has been a key member of a Championship promotion campaign, when Aitor Karanka was at the helm, and has the knowhow and pedigree to galvanise a Leeds midfield that has long looked short of true class.
