West Ham are interested in signing central midfielder Clement Grenier from Lyon, according to a reliable journalist.

Sun reporter Alan Nixon has claimed on his personal Twitter account that the Hammers are eyeing a January move for the 27-year-old.

It is understood that the Premier League side want to try negotiate a deal with the French outfit this month over a pre-contract move with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.

Grenier has completely fallen out of favour at Lyon this campaign and made just two appearances across all competitions.

Good move for West Ham?

West Ham could do with some more reinforcements this month, but landing Grenier on a pre-contract deal and welcoming him in the summer would be the best action to take.

The five-time capped France international has barely played in the last 18 months and would be miles off the pace to make a big impact in the Premier League.

He has shown in the past that he does have quality and the midfielder was once an ever-present in the Lyon side, with his range of passing and set-piece ability a major positive to his game.

Grenier has scored 18 goals and supplied 28 appearances during 154 games for them, but is going through a difficult period.

Likely to happen?

It seems like West Ham stand a good chance of wrapping up a pre-contract agreement for the Lyon player that has been frozen out so far this campaign.

His side have had a busy schedule with Europa League football to balance, but he has still barely got a look in.
