Tottenham may be prepared to step up their interest in Norwich playmaker James Maddison, according to the Evening Standard.

The newspaper claims that Spurs are interested in the Championship midfielder alongside Liverpool, Manchester City and Leicester.

It is understood that Norwich would be reluctant to sell the 21-year-old during January and would demand at least £20million.

The report details that Spurs could now look to sign the England Under-21 international in January with a view to loaning him back to the Canaries until the end of the season, something they did with Dele Alli and MK Dons in 2015.

Spurs have been in contact with Norwich recently over Marcus Edwards and the Premier League side loaned out their winger for the rest of the campaign.

The Mirror previously claimed that Spurs were eyeing a summer swoop for Maddison, but the latest development is that it could move forward to January.

Good move for Spurs?

Maddison is currently in brilliant form in the Championship and looks a player destined for the top flight.

The attacking midfielder has now scored eight goals and supplied eight assists for Norwich across all competitions this season.

He looks perfect for the type of player that Mauricio Pochettino can help develop and become the latest young English star at the north London club.

It would make sense allowing him to finish the season on loan with Norwich if they could wrap up a deal and that way they could avoid a potential mad scramble for his signature in the summer.

Likely to happen?

Spurs have become renowned for picking up young sensations in recent years and if they are willing to meet the £20million price tag in January there is no reason why a deal couldn’t be struck.

The inclusion of an immediate loan back to Norwich would help sweeten things their end of the deal and he is an extremely highly-rated player for a good reason, with his serious goal threat and intelligent movement setting him apart from his teammates.
