Stoke City defender Geoff Cameron has emerged as a last-minute target for Newcastle United, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claims on its transfer blog (5:09pm, Tuesday) that the Magpies are interested in the 32-year-old from their Premier League rivals.

It is understood that Crystal Palace and Burnley are also keen on the 55-time capped USA international.

The report details that the 6ft 3in enforcer is willing to leave the bet365 Stadium in search of more minutes.

Cameron is an extremely versatile player that can be used at either right-back, centre-back or as a midfielder.

Good move for Newcastle?

Cameron would help cover a number of positions at St James’ Park, but he is not the type of signing that Rafael Benitez needs right now.

Newcastle need to try and add a new centre-forward to their squad in the closing moments of the January window.

Stoke’s utility man Cameron is a no-nonsense enforcer that has a wealth of experience in the Premier League, while he would perhaps be useful in a relegation fight.

However, he is not the high-profile signing that the fans are waiting for.

Likely to happen?

Newcastle have become interested in Cameron very late in the window and a lot would need to happen in the next 24 hours for this deal to take place, but Benitez’s side could be forced to panic with Kenedy their only addition in January so far.
