Tottenham striker Shayon Harrison is on the verge a late January loan switch to Southend United, according to Football Insider.

The football news site claim that Spurs are set to given the green light for the 20-year-old centre-forward to head to the League One outfit for the remainder of the campaign.

Football Insider report that an agreement has been reached between Tottenham and Southend, who have beaten a number of Football League clubs to the loan signing of the highly rated youngster.

It is said that the move is set to be announced ahead of the transfer window cut-off on Wednesday night.

Harrison is a regular member of the Tottenham Under-23s but has not added to the single substitute appearance he made for the senior side last season, which came in a League Cup defeat to Liverpool in October 2016.

Southend are 17th in League One and fighting to avoid relegation to the fourth tier of English football.

They recently appointed former England left-back and ex-Spurs coach Chris Powell as their new manager.

OPINION

It is the ideal time for Harrison to go out on loan and show that he can replicate his prolific scoring at youth team level in senior football. The young centre-forward did not do as well as many had hope during a loan spell at Yeovil last season, scoring just once in 15 matches, but he has continued to plunder goals back at his parent club, with 20 strikes in total from 41 Premier League 2 appearances. Those are statistics that have made lower league clubs sit up and take notice. If Harrison can make more of an impact in a second loan spell, and Southend appear to be the right type of club for him, it could propel him up the pecking order at Tottenham and possibly even into the thoughts of manager Mauricio Pochettino.
