Nottingham Forest are eyeing up a last-ditch swoop for Liverpool full-back Jon Flanagan, according to reliable journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The former Sky Sports reporter, now featured on ESPN, claimed on his personal Twitter account on Wednesday that the Championship side are plotting a move to sign Flanagan, 25, on loan until the end of the season.

Aitor Karanka has been masterminding a late transfer blitz at the City Ground in what has been an usually busy January for the East Midlands giants.

Ashkan Dejagah and Costel Pantilimon have both been confirmed to have signed for Forest on their official website while the Daily Mail claimed in its live transfer blog on Wednesday [05:51pm] that the club are in talks to sign Cardiff forward Lee Tomlin.

Flanagan, who has one senior cap for England, can play at both right-back and left-back, but has made just one appearances in all competitions for Liverpool.

Good move for Nottingham Forest?

Absolutely not. Signing Flanagan could be a disaster for Forest and they should avoid him at all costs. Earlier this month, the defender was sentenced to 40 hours of unpaid work for assaulting his girlfriend and that is surely not the kind of person that Forest want at the City Ground. Signing him is not necessary. Too many late arrivals could really disrupt the balance and morale of this squad.

Likely to happen?

Forest’s squad is heaving with players on loan already and there could potentially be more to arrive in the final hours of deadline day with Jack Colback and Ben Watson also reportedly linked with the City Ground. Forest’s interest in Flanagan seems very premature so there may not be enough time to pull this off.
