Rangers have opened talks with Hamilton over signing their midfielder Greg Docherty according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper claim that discussions between the two clubs for the player have begun, with Hamilton wanting £600,000 for his services.

The Daily Record report Cardiff City are also interested in the 21-year-old but Docherty’s preferred option would be Rangers.

Graeme Murty is keen on Docherty as he believes the centre midfielder would add steel and energy to his midfield.

The 21-year-old, who has already featured over 100 times for Hamilton, is also capable of playing as an attacking midfielder or as a right midfielder when needed.

This season, Docherty has shown his playmaking abilities as he has created six goals, while also scoring three, in 25 appearances.

Good move for Rangers?

Yes. The midfielder is more than capable of slotting into Rangers’ team and as he is still young; he could feature in it for many years to come.

Docherty’s versatility could prove useful, but his ability to be an energetic presence in the heart of the Gers team, would enable them to kick-on further in the second-half of the season.

Likely to happen?

Cardiff City seem like no competition give the fact Docherty’s preference is Rangers, even though Neil Warnock’s side are sitting third in the Championship with a very good chance of the Premier League next season.

The Light Blues will not be able to negotiate Hamilton down from their 600,000 demand, as they hold all the cards with Docherty still contracted to the club until 2020.

If Rangers have no problem paying that for his services, then this deal is well on it’s way to happening.
