Rangers are close to reaching an agreement with Brighton for the signing of goalscoring wide man Jamie Murphy, according to the Scottish Daily Mail.

The newspaper claim that the Glasgow giants are in advanced negotiations to land the 28-year-old in a £1million-plus deal.

The Mail report that ex-Motherwell star Murphy has been high on the wanted list of director of football Mark Allen for some time and is now set to return north of the border.

Murphy made 40 appearances last term for Brighton, helping them gain promotion from the Championship.

But he has been a bit-part player in the Premier League and has turned out just four times for Chris Hughton’s side this season, failing to make the matchday squad for their 2-2 Premier League draw against Bournemouth on Monday.

Good move for Rangers?

Yes. Murphy has a strong track record in the SPL, scoring 49 goals in 212 ‘Well matches, and would provide a major goalscoring option from out wide. The winger was a regular for Hughton’s team last season and was integral to their promotion campaign but has slipped down the pecking order and a January exit appears to suit all parties. Rangers are not especially well served for left midfield flyers, a role filled with mixed success by Josh Windass for the majority of the campaign, including in Saturday’s Old Firm draw.

Likely to happen?

This deal virtually appears to be done. With a fee seemingly settled with Brighton, expect Murphy to be in place in time to link up with the Rangers squad at their winter training camp in Florida.
