Rangers defender Ross Lyon has agreed a development loan with Scottish League One side Stranraer, it has been announced.

Lyon, who can play in a number of positions across the pitch but is predominantly a right-back, has signed for the third tier outfit in a deal that runs for the remainder of the campaign.

The deal was confirmed by the Rangers Youth Academy on their official Twitter account on Saturday.

Lyon has yet to make his first-team debut for the Gers but has been an unused substitute in the past for the Ibrox side.

After making the move official, Lyon was was a late substitute for Stranraer in their 2-2 draw against Queen’s Park at Hampden on Saturday.

The 19-year-old right-back was a key part of Graeme Murty’s Under-20’s squad last season as they reached the Scottish FA Youth Cup final against Old Firm rivals Celtic.

Lyon can play down either flank as a winger or full-back and in a number of more central roles.

OPINION

This is a smart move for Lyon, particularly as the terms of the development loan allow him to only represent Stranraer but also to still be available for the Rangers Under-20s side if needed between now and the end of the season. This is the best of both worlds for the Light Blues academy product, who has worked his way through the club’s ranks since joining at the age of seven. It allows him to develop in senior football while also playing for Rangers’ age-group sides if he is not getting much game time at Stranraer.
