Fabio Cardoso has vowed to stay at Rangers and fight for his place despite falling down the pecking order under Graeme Murty.

According to The Scottish Sun, the centre-back is thought to be one of five players that the Gers are willing to sell in January.

However, the defender doesn’t want to leave the club and revealed that while he could secure a move, he has no intention of leaving the Light Blues.

“I’m willing to fight for my place in this team,” vowed Cardoso, as quoted by The Scottish Sun.

“I don’t want to give up, I could give up and try to find another team.

“But playing for Rangers is going to help me a lot in my career.”

The 23-year-old was a regular under Pedro Caixinha, but has since found his opportunities limited under Murty.

The defender broke his nose during the Scottish League Cup semi-final against Motherwell, which ruled him out for month just as Murty took over.

Cardoso has only featured 15 times across all competitions this season, failing to appear in Ranger’s last five league games.

The Portuguese defender joined in the summer from Vitoria Setubal, signing a three-year contract worth £1.3million, and despite facing a January exit, was adamant he has settled in Scotland.

“I love life in Scotland, I enjoy it, it’s impossible not to enjoy playing for Glasgow Rangers,” confessed the defender.

“Also, I like staying in Glasgow, I want to be here for a long time.

“Myself and my girlfriend love the place; even the cold weather doesn’t bother us.”

OPINION

With the defender being only 23-years-old and determined to stay, it seems silly to get rid of him permanently in January. The player might want to stay and fight, but if the Gers secured him a short-term deal; he could impress while away from the club. It’s unfortunate that his injury came at a time when Murty was building his team following Caixinha’s exit, but it was an unavoidable situation. While Rangers fans will want to forgot about Caixinha’s brief terrible spell at the club, they shouldn’t be too hasty to completely wipe everyone associated with his reign from history. Cardoso still has the possibility of developing into a player, good enough for the first-team once again.
