West Ham remain keen on Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey and are preparing a loan-to-buy offer for the 25-year-old, according to the Evening Standard.

The newspaper report that David Moyes’ priority in the January window is in midfield, and that the club are now likely to pursue their interest in Shelvey.

The Standard claim that Romford-born Shelvey is said to be keen on a move back south, and the Hammers are now considering a loan-to-buy offer for his services.

Shelvey has spent two years in the northeast with the Magpies, and was a vital figure in their promotion back to the Premier League last season.

The fiery 25-year-old has seen red twice already this season, in their Premier League clashes against Tottenham and Everton.

Good move for West Ham?

It is easy to see why the Hammers want to strengthen in midfield, with Cheikhou Kouyate, Pedro Obiang and Mark Noble needing reinforcements in that area.

But, is Shelvey the sensible move here?

The six-time England international is talented, everyone knows that, but time and time again he has shown massive flaws in his game.

His two red cards so far this season highlight his shortcomings, and West Ham would be taking a risk by signing the 25-year-old.

Likely to happen?

You would think not.

Shelvey remains an important squad player for Rafa Benitez at the Magpies, and there is nothing for him to gain in letting Shelvey leave on a loan-to-buy deal.

Benitez needs funds now, and would significantly weaken his side by letting Shelvey go.

Unless the Hammers come in with a decent offer for a permanent deal, then it remains unlikely that this will happen.
