Oxford can only be sold to Borussia Monchengladbach in January

|

Borussia Monchengladbach are confident about signing West Ham’s Reece Oxford in January as he can’t play for any other club in the second half of the season, according to Bild.

The newspaper claim that as Oxford featured for the Hammers against Shrewsbury Town, the German club are the only side the defender can realistically move to, as he can’t be registered for a third club this season.

Bild report that Oxford still doesn’t feature in David Moyes’ plans for the second half of the season, and that the 19-year-old wants to move to Borussia Monchengladbach.

The same report claims that the only reason why Oxford’s loan to the Bundesliga side was ended in January, was so the Hammers could sell him for a profit in this window.

Max Eberl, the director of sport at the German club, is quoted in the article as being confident about signing Oxford.

“Reece can not play for three clubs in one season, we’re just waiting,” said Eberl.

The 19-year-old centre-back made only four appearances, while on loan at Borussia Monchengladbach this season.

The Telegraph previously reported that the German club had bid £8million for Oxford, only for the Hammers to reject and demand £15million for the defender’s services.

Good move for West Ham?

The Hammers have royally messed up regarding Oxford, if the report is true about the club being keen to sell the defender.

West Ham are very unlikely to get their previous demand of £15million, as the German club now know, he’s unlikely to be wanted by anyone else in this window.

This gives Borussia Monchengladbach the advantage when negotiating a price.

Likely to happen?

The 19-year-old is contracted to West Ham until 2021, so the Hammers could be stubborn and hold onto him until the summer.

The defender might not get game time under Moyes, but that might not see his value drop.

However, as West Ham need to make several signings of their own; it’s more likely they’ll cave on their £15million demand, and accept the German’s side offer of £8million.

As that £8million could be quickly reinvest in to the Hammers’ squad in January.
