Paul Merson has predicted that Tottenham will beat Manchester United when they face them on Wednesday night.

Spurs host Jose Mourinho’s side in the Premier League in midweek and will be looking to force their way back into the top four.

The north London club were held to a 1-1 draw in their last league match and are currently in fifth, two points adrift of fourth-placed Liverpool.

Meanwhile, Man United are second in the league standings and a win against Spurs would put them in pole position for a top-four finish.

Mauricio Pochettino’s team lost 1-0 at Old Trafford in the previous meeting with Man United this season, but will be hoping for a reverse scoreline at Wembley.

Sky Sports pundit Merson has tipped to pick up the three points with a 2-1 win if they name their strongest XI.

“This will be a difficult game for them [Man United] because I just can’t see how they will outscore Spurs,” Merson wrote in his column for Sky Sports.

“Jose Mourinho will go to Wembley and set his side up not to get beat. With Alexis Sanchez on board that little bit of extra quality gives them a big chance but if Tottenham can get their full strength side out they’ll be very difficult to stop.”

OPINION

This simply is a must-win game for Spurs at the weekend and they need to take points off their rivals at home if they are to end up in the top four. They have suffered two setbacks recently with draws against Southampton and then Newport County in the FA Cup, but they are always likely to raise their game against a main league rival. Man United’s new signing Alexis Sanchez would love to get one over Spurs following his move from Arsenal in January, but in Harry Kane Pochettino’s team have arguably the deadliest striker in world football right now.
