Newcastle United striker Ivan Toney is set to complete a loan move to Scunthorpe United today, according to Football Insider.

The centre-forward, 21, has agreed terms with the League One promotion challengers and a deal is in place for the transfer less than 24 hours after he was recalled from his loan move at Wigan Athletic.

Football Insider report Newcastle terminated Toney’s season-long loan at the League One leaders after being “unhappy” with the amount of game time he was getting at the club in recent weeks, which has included being on the bench for eight consecutive matches.

It is said that Scunthorpe manager Graham Alexander is a big fan of Toney, who scored seven goals in 17 appearances on loan at the club last season.

He is set to link up immediately with the Iron, who are placed fourth in the table and challenging for promotion.

Good move for Scunthorpe?

Definitely. Toney is a penalty box predator who is destined for a fine career. He has showed in his various loan spells that he can provide a genuine cutting edge in the English third tier, even scoring six goals in 28 Wigan appearances despite most of those appearances coming off the bench. Clearly, Scunthorpe have been able to take the 21-year-old for the second half of the season after offering playing guarantees that Wigan would not. His imminent arrival is a feather in the cap for Alexander, and could be a gamechanger in the League One title race.

Likely to happen?

Football Insider have broken a series of transfer stories during this window and, if they say a deal is close, you can expect an announcement to be close. It is likely that Toney’s loan to Scunthorpe will be confirmed in the next 24 hours.
