Martin Keown believes that Tottenham can reach an agreement to keep Harry Kane happy at the club amid reports of him being offered a new mega-money deal.

The Daily Mail report that Spurs will smash their wage structure to offer the 24-year-old a new stunning £200,000-a-week deal.

It would make him the best paid English player in the Premier League and leapfrog Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling in the process.

The report details that Kane would become the joint sixth highest earner in the top flight if he penned the new £200,000-a-week deal, drawing level with Kevin De Bruyne, David De Gea and Eden Hazard.

The prolific centre-forward is currently on £110,000-a-week wage and Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is ready to fork out to keep him.

Keown feels that Kane can commit his long-term future to Spurs if he is earning at the top bracket and if he is winning silverware.

“Tottenham and Kane have to strike a happy medium when it comes to his contract,” Keown told the Daily Mail.

“While Kane cannot become the Premier League’s best-paid player at Spurs, the club can still show him they are looking after him financially as much as they can.

“Kane would only leave Tottenham for a Real Madrid or Barcelona but everything is here for him in the Premier League. This league has the best managers and Kane can set records here.”

OPINION

It is imperative that Kane is kept at the centre of the Spurs team over the next decade and ripping up the wage structure if a necessity if they want to keep him. It will be a positive step to see the striker break the £200,000-a-week wage bracket and his performances over the past few years prove he is one of the outstanding individuals in the Premier League. However, a lot of it will surely boil down to the club’s success in competitions as their trophy drought continues. Spurs have missed brilliant opportunities recently to win trophies and a player of Kane’s calibre can’t be expected to wait around forever.
