Rangers are in negotiations with Azerbaijan club Gabala over recalling Andy Halliday from his loan deal in January, according to a reliable journalist.

Sunday Mail chief football writer Scott McDermott claimed on his personal Twitter account on Friday afternoon that the Light Blues are attempting to bolster their midfield options by reaching an agreement for Halliday, 26, to head back to Ibrox in the middle of his season-long loan.

Halliday made a shock move to the minor league the summer after being frozen out of the Rangers first-team by ex-manager Pedro Caixinha.

However now that the Portuguese is no longer in Glasgow, it appears that the Gers have plans to make Halliday a part of their first-team set-up once again.

Good move for Rangers?

It would sum up Rangers’ problems if their answer to the midfield injury crisis that has robbed them of Graham Dorrans, Ryan Jack and Kenny Miller is Halliday. Caixinha did not get that much right at Ibrox, but he was not wrong to discard Halliday for not being of the standard of player required by such a demanding club. The potential recall of Halliday is a clear signal that Rangers have no money to spend in the transfer market, and will have to rely on unsatisfactory short-term fixes to solve their many deficiencies.

Likely to happen?

Given that talks are said to be official underway, it appears that a deal is highly possible. Gabala are unlikely to put up too much of a fight, as Halliday has barely featured for their team in the last two months.
