Aberdeen legend Duncan Shearer has claimed Aberdeen want Derek McInnes more than Rangers and believes he will damage his reputation at Ibrox.

It is now looking likely that McInnes will complete his move to Rangers after six long weeks of speculation since the sacking of Pedro Caixinha.

As reported by the Scottish Sun, McInnes is expected to seal his move to Glasgow on Thursday after holding overnight talks with Aberdeen chairman Stewart Milne.

And Shearer thinks that McInnes is making a huge mistake by going to Gers, and claims that he was not the club’s first choice as manager.

Speaking to the Daily Record, Shearer said: “Aberdeen have shown their ambition by knocking back £1million and I’d hope Derek matches that ambition by staying on to see through the job he started. By rejecting an offer like that Stewart made it abundantly clear he wants Derek but Rangers have not been nearly as convincing about how much they want him. That should be in Derek’s thinking.

“If I were Derek I would be thinking long and hard before making this jump. But he’s not a stupid lad. There’s going to have to be a lot of things right at Rangers, he’s going to need a lot of assurances before he steps into that seat – because if it isn’t right he could really damage his reputation there.”

Shearer also went on to put forward a replacement for McInnes should he make the move to Ibrox.

“If Derek was to go I would like to see Tommy Wright replace him. But I don’t think that’s a decision the chairman wants to have to make again. He’s made the right decision with Derek and he wants to stick with that. But we’ll see how it pans out,” he said.

OPINION

It is unsurprising to see someone with so many ties to the Dons speak out against McInnes moving to Rangers. He has done so much for the club and fans will never want to see him leave. But if he was to pass up this opportunity, there is no guarantee anything like it would come up again. McInnes is right to take the chance while he can and move to a bigger club like Rangers.
