Celtic and Rangers are locked in a battle to sign Dundee defender Jack Hendry in the January window, according to Football Insider.

The reliable football news site claim that the Glasgow giants will go head to head to secure the signature of the 22-year-old as they aim to strengthen in the centre-back position.

Football Insider report that both clubs are keeping close tabs on Hendry and are ready to table formal bids for him when the winter window opens next month.

Good move for Celtic?

Yes, definitely. Hendry might not be better than Jozo Simunovic and Erik Sviatchenko right now, but he has the potential to leapfrog both of them if he continues his massive improvement. The rising defensive star has not only blown observers away with his commanding performances this season in marquee matches – he was excellent against both Celtic and Rangers – but has started 14 of Dundee’s 15 league matches, something that has been beyond the brittle Celtic centre-backs.

Likely to happen?

Hendry is entering the final 18 months of his contract at Dundee after joining from Wigan Athletic in the summer. The Scottish Premiership outfit won’t want to lose such a key player midway through the season, but the January window is more significant in Scotland than it is in England and major transfer activity does take place. With Celtic reportedly very keen, this could happen, although Rangers’ strong interest adds a fascinating dimension.
