Aston Villa have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick, according to ESPN.

The website claims that Villa, Leicester and West Brom have all made enquires to sign the 36-year-old due to his lack of game-time at Old Trafford.

It is understood that the former England international has made the emphatic decision to stay with the Red Devils and ignore interest from other clubs.

The report details that club captain Carrick is set to stay with United and that he is currently coaching their Under-14s side as he prepares for life after his playing career.

Carrick has carved out a highly successful career since his debut in 1999 and played a pivotal role in United winning the Champions League in the 2007/08 season.

Good move for Villa?

Carrick can’t have too long left in his playing career as he reaches the latter stages, but he would be a sensational pick up if Steve Bruce signed him in January.

The central midfielder is one of the best passers of the ball in English football over the past decade and has five Premier League medals to his name to show his quality.

He still managed 38 appearances last season for Jose Mourinho’s side and would look a class above in the Championship.

Villa already have one superb leader in John Terry in their ranks and pulling off a sensational deal for Carrick would give the dressing room two elite players.

Likely to happen???

This deal never seemed likely and Carrick’s desire to stay at Old Trafford will crush any possibility.

The midfielder is on the fringes of the United squad and seems content with his current position, but a calf injury has kept him out of contention recently.

Villa can move into fifth in the league table if they win on Wednesday night and do still have some good midfield options.
