Manchester United fans took to Twitter to slaughter Henrikh Mkhitaryan for his performance in their 2-0 Champions League win against Benfica on Tuesday night.
The Armenia international was demoted to the substitute’s bench for the Old Trafford clash after starting nine of United’s 10 Premier League fixtures this season.
But Mkhitaryan was sent off at half-time by manager Jose Mourinho as a replacement for Jesse Lingard, who was one of six changes too the team that beat Tottenham last Saturday.
But Mkhitaryan struggled to make an impact on the right flank even though United cruised to victory through a Mile Svilar own goal and a Daley Blind penalty.
United are on the verge of reaching the Champions League knockout stage for the first time in four years after their triumph.
Mourinho’s side, who qualified by winning last season’s Europa League, have won all four of their Group A matches and need just a point from their remaining two games to progress.
But the United faithful were not happy with the contribution of Mkhitaryan, with a section of supporters calling for him to be axed after what they felt was another poor performance.
