Rangers have joined the running to sign midfielder Riley McGree from Belgian side Club Brugge, according to the Scotsman.

The newspaper claims that the Gers have entered the race for the 19-year-old sensation.

It is understood that Celtic are also interested and are currently scouting him, while they were also keen on him in the summer before he joined Brugge from Adelaide United.

The report details that Brugge would be prepared to let the Australian central midfielder leave in January or next summer for the right price.

McGree only moved to Brugge in the summer and signed a contact until 2021, but is still awaiting his first-team debut and two Scottish giants are circling for his signature.

Good move for Rangers?

Rangers should always be looking to strengthen their squad as they try to be more competitive in the league.

They do already have Carlos Pena, Graham Dorrans, Jason Holt, Ryan Jack as options in midfield, meaning other areas should be prioritised in the summer.

However, McGree is an exciting upcoming talent and has been dubbed the best young star in Australian football.

The midfielder is technically very gifted and has been included in the Australia senior squad before, but is still awaiting his first cap.

He showed in the A-League division with Adelaide that he is good enough to make an impact at senior level and could be a big success in Scottish football with regular game-time.

Likely to happen?

Rangers have entered the running late for McGree and it’s unlikely that they could snap him up ahead of Old Firm rivals Celtic, who are a far better proposition for young players looking to move to Scotland.

The Gers are still yet to appoint a full-time successor following Pedro Caixinha’s dismissal and any new boss will have his own transfer ideas.

McGree could well end up in Scottish football if he continues to be excelled from the senior team at Brugge, but Rangers are certainly at a disadvantage in this deal.
