Liverpool have made contact with Egyptian club Al Ahly about defender Ahmed Hegazi following his impressive performances this season during a loan spell with West Brom, according to ESPN.

The news outlet claims that the Reds are lining up a swoop for the 26-year-old after monitoring him and are keen to offer to bolster their backline.

It is understood that the Merseyside club have asked Al Ahly about the powerhouse centre-back, while Leicester are also believed to be keen on his signature.

The report details that West Brom are in pole position for his signature as they have an option in his loan deal to make it permanent for £4.4million.

Hegazi has become a mainstay in the Baggies team this campaign and is recognised for his no-nonsense approach.

Good move for Liverpool?

There is no doubt that Liverpool need to bring in a couple of new centre-backs to their squad to improve their defence, but Hegazi is not neccarily the player that can improve them.

Jurgen Klopp must go all out to sign Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk, who would be an instant upgrade on his side’s current options.

Hegazi has proven himself to be a decent player in the Premier League so far and is a big physical presence that could perhaps toughen up the Liverpool defence.

However, the Merseyside club should be aiming a lot higher than the Egypt international and could really challenge for major honours if they sort their defence out.

Likely to happen?

It appears unlikely that Liverpool would be able to bring Hegazi to Anfield as West Brom will have first say on his future.

Egyptian Mohamed Salah could try play a role to bring his international teammate to the club, but he wouldn’t be guaranteed first-team football if he moved.

Hegazi has become a popular figure during his short time with West Brom and it seems more likely he would sign a permanent deal there.
