Broadcaster Alan Brazil has urged Rangers to sell up to Mike Ashley as there is “no serious money” at the club.

The Glasgow giants are currently fourth in the Premiership and face a double-header against Aberdeen after losing their previous two matches against Dundee And Hamilton.

Rangers have spent five weeks searching for a new manager but have failed to make an appointment amid speculation they are not able to afford the men they really want.

Former Scotland international Brazil insisted current owner Dave King has made a huge mess of his reign and Rangers are paying the price for failing to sanction the bid by Sports Direct tycoon Ashley to buy the club.

Brazil reiterated his belief to get Ashley back on board if he leaves Newcastle as he tipped Alex McLeish or Ally McCoist for the vacant manager’s job.

Speaking on the Alan Brazil Breakfast Show on talkSPORT on Wednesday morning, he said: “Come on. Alex McLeish or Ally McCoist, get them in.

“If Mike Ashley sells Newcastle it wouldn’t be a good idea to get him back in and change at the top. Because it’s clear to me, at the top, there is no serious money.

“They are just paddling, they’re not going one way or another, they’re going backwards.

“I’ve said all along about Rangers, they need someone in there who knows what it’s all about, who knows the club. Ally left, so maybe Ally’s out of it. But Alex McLeish would dive at that.

“It’s not a quick fix, they’re miles behind and I mean miles behind.

“You need someone in there who understands what the club means to the supporters all around the world, not just Glasgow.”

OPINION

Newcastle fans might scoff at the notion that Ashley is the answer to Rangers’ financial woes, especially after Rafael Benitez claimed the club can’t even compete in the transfer market with the Premier League minnows. Nevertheless, the man who has owned Newcastle since 2007 is in advanced talks to sell the north-east giants and has tried to buy a major stake in Rangers before. He acquired a minority stake in the Light Blues in October 2014 and attempted to increase this to the 30 per cent threshold but was rejected by the Scottish Football Association. But, is Brazil now on to something? If Ashley sells Newcastle, there won’t be any objection from football chiefs north of the border in him taking over Rangers, where the cash required to fund the club is far less than in the Premier League.
