Aberdeen central midfielder Kenny McLean is expected to join Rangers at the end of the season, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper claim that the Light Blues are set to make another move for the 25-year-old after Dons manager Derek McInnes confirmed he will be leaving the club when his contract expires.

The Daily Record report that a deal for the central midfield dynamo is likely to be done “next summer”.

Aberdeen held on to McLean during the last transfer window after fending off interest from rival club as McInnes set out to rebuild his squad following the departures of Jonny Hayes, Ryan Jack, Niall McGinn, Peter Pawlett and Ash Taylor.

McLean’s contract is up next summer and he is free to sign a pre-contract with a foreign club in January.

The central midfielder has made 129 appearances for Aberdeen since joining from St Mirren and has been a mainstay of the side this season, scoring three goals from 18 matches in all competitions.

Good move for Rangers?

Bruno Alves, Alfredo Morelos and Daniel Candeias have proved to be smart buys for Rangers but the new boss needd to land a few more players who have showed they can deliver in the top flight. Like another long-time target Jamie Walker, McLean would be able to hit the ground running in a way most of the 11 Pedro Caixinha would struggle to match. He knows the SPL inside out and has a proven track record in the league.

Likely to happen?

Much will depend upon the identity of the new manager. McInnes is the odds-on favourite to land the role, which would suggest there is a strong possibility that McLean will be wearing a Light Blues shirt next season.
