Charlie Adam has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show that Rangers’ pursuit of Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes has hit a major hurdle.

Ex-Ibrox midfielder Adam, 31, claimed on Friday morning that the Scottish giants are struggling to agree a compensation package with Aberdeen for Derek McInnes.

Adam is convinced that Rangers’ lengthy managerial pursuit is “getting embarrassing” and urged his former club to seal an immediate appointment.

It has been widely reported, including by the Sunday Post, that Rangers want McInnes to take over from Pedro Caixinha, who was sacked three weeks ago, and that the deal would be done within days.

“I’m hearing that McInnes is close, but compensation is an issue,” Adam told talkSPORT on Friday morning.

“But they have to make a statement. They have the perfect time over the international break to sort it out. The more the dilly and dally over it, I’m not sure what will happen. I think it will come down to finances.

“The board need to make an appointment. It’s getting embarrassing.”

OPINION

Adam’s revelation is fascinating and, for Rangers fans, quite alarming. The £800,000 compensation fee needed to prise McInnes from Pittodrie is not gargantuan by modern football standards but the Light Blues’ recently posted annual results showed they are not swimming in money. Far from it. They are living beyond their means thanks to loans from owner Dave King. This explains why the pursuit of McInnes has been an elongated one and flies in the face of claims that he would be well in place at Ibrox by now.
