Aston Villa will hold talks with Tottenham about trying to sign loanee John Onomah, according to the Birmingham Mail.

The regional newspaper claim that Villa have not got the money to buy the midfielder, 20, in January but the picture could change if they secure promotion back to the Premier League.

The Birmingham Mail report that the Midlands giants will pursue the option of another season-long loan and that discussions with the Premier League club will “certainly” take place.

It is said that Spurs rate Onomah “highly” and have no plans to sell but the situation could change even as early as next summer.

Predominantly an attacking midfielder but also capable of operating in a deep-lying playmaker role, Onomah has made impressive strides during his time under Steve Bruce, who has said he would love to “break the bank” for the youngster.

Onomah has scored twice in eight Championship starts, and made 16 appearances in total for Villa since dropping down a division.

The youngster has made 32 senior Spurs appearances, the majority of which have been as a late substitute.

OPINION

Onomah is a rising star for club and country. He has been highly thought of at Tottenham for some time, and many would rather him be in the matchday squad than 2016 flop signing Georges-Kevin NKoudou. But the player is certainly better served by playing regular senior football rather than sitting on the sidelines, or playing at Under-23s level. Onomah has out-grown that standard, and has benefitted this season from playing against hardened professionals week in, week out. Spurs will be delighted that he is developing out on loan, but the player is unlikely to settle for fringe status at White Hart Lane next season and there could be a big decision to make.
