Manchester City are reportedly preparing a January swoop for Leicester playmaker Riyad Mahrez, but Tottenham should consider joining the race for his signature.

Spanish outlet Don Balon claims that Premier League leaders Man City are lining up a move for the 26-year-old in the New Year as Pep Guardiola’s looks to bolster his impressive squad.

The Algeria international was subject to interest from Barcelona last summer, while Arsenal and Chelsea have both been linked.

However, the right-winger is still at the King Power Stadium for now and is in good form for the Foxes.

Spurs should plot their own move to bring Mahrez to north London in January and he could be the missing piece to their jigsaw.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side is crying out for some extra creativity in wide areas and the trickster proved his quality by helping Leicester win the Premier League title in the 2015/16 campaign.

Mahrez is a left-footed genius that is ready for a new start in his career and he could flourish with some of the star names already at Spurs.

It would not be a completely random swoop either as they have previously been linked with the Algerian.

The Telegraph reported back in May that Spurs were in the race for Mahrez’s signature in the summer transfer window, but they eventually missed out along with other interested parties.

Mahrez has three goals and five assists in 13 games this season for Leicester, which suggests he is getting back to the kind of form that saw him crowned PFA Player of the Year when his side won the title.

Spurs are perhaps just lacking that extra X factor in their side and adding the playmaker could make them an unstoppable force.
