Gus Poyet has claimed there is something missing at Tottenham that has coincided with their trophy drought.

Spurs have not won a piece of silverware since the League Cup in 2008 and it will be a 10-year wait and counting in February for the club’s supporters.

The north London club have been transformed under the guidance of Mauricio Pochettino in recent years and his team have been involved in the last two Premier League title races.

However, the Argentinian manager is still trying to win his first trophy with them and his talented squad could be forgotton if they don’t finally get over the line.

Ex-Spurs midfielder Poyet has found it hard to pinpoint the exact reason behind the club’s trophy drought, but has suggested there has been an issue with recruitment recently.

He has explained that they are yet to bring in a group of players that can support the core individuals.

“It could be many things [why they haven’t won a trophy],” Poyet told Daily Star.

“Holding the best players, like they’ve been doing in the last few years – Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane and then slowly bringing in certain players that you need to get to the next level.

“Then you need a bit of luck – sometimes at the right time at the right moment something good happens to Spurs.

“But there is something missing and it is difficult to say from the outside.”

OPINION

Spurs’ recruitment has been decent in the last few years and the arrival of Davinson Sanchez for £42million in the summer was a statement of their intent. The young centre-back was a club-record signing for the north London club, but they are now desperate to finally win trophies on a regular basis. There is perhaps a lack of know-how in the dressing room and that experience of winning trophies is vital in helping teams win titles. Spurs do have a January window on the horizon and a good approach could be bring in a few extra experienced heads that can help the younger talented players.
