Newcastle United should abandon all plans to sign Atletico Madrid ace Fernando Torres and join the reported hunt for his teammate Kevin Gameiro.

The Mirror claims that the Magpies are on red alert for Torres, 33, as he looks to seal a return to the Premier League.

However, the Spaniard would not be the best option for the North East club and there is another Atletico centre-forward they should prioritise.

French outlet Le 10 Sport claims that Ligue 1 club Lille are interested in signing Gameiro.

It is reported that the 30-year-old’s future is up in the air ahead of the January window as he is failing to cement his place in the starting XI.

Newcastle must hijack interest in the French striker and attempt to bring him to St James’ Park in what would be a tremendous coup.

Gameiro is renowned for being a speed demon that terrorises defence in behind and is also decent in the air

The forward has proven himself to be a prolific goalscorer over the years during spells with clubs such as Sevilla, Paris Saint-Germain and now Atletico.

He has notched up 17 goals in 53 appearances for Atletico, but his game time is at a premium due to Antoine Griezmann and it could be even less when Diego Costa becomes available in January.

Newcastle are in desperate need of a new forward to lead the line as they have the defensive platform to become a force in the Premier League.

It could cost a large fee to bring him over to England, but the imminent takeover at the Magpies could mean there are more transfer funds available.

Rafael Benitez is a major pulling power to attract top players and he could work wider with proven performer Gameiro in his side.

The likes of Mikel Merino and Jonjo Shelvey would flourish having a clinical striker at the point of their attack.
