Tottenham centre-back Juan Foyth was a creative playmaker at the beginning of his footballing career, according to FourFourTwo.

The magazine has revealed the 19-year-old was an attacking midfielder that usually played in the number 10 role during his time in the youth team of Estudiantes.

It is understood he was conveeted into a defender just before he turned 16 and his attacking instincts mean he is very comfortable in possession.

Spurs decided to sign Argentinian Foyth for £8million in the summer and the teenager has linked up with compatriot Mauricio Pochettino in England.

The defender is still waiting for his first Premie League appearance, but has already played two times at senior level in the Carabao Cup.

He completed 90 minutes against both Barnsley and West Ham, where he impressed fans with his composure on the ball.

Foyth will have to be patient for his opportunity this season to force his way into the starting XI as their are some senior players above him in the pecking order.

Spurs usually operate with a three-man defence and Foyth is competing alongside Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier for a spot.

OPINION

Foyth is certainly a working progress at Spurs, but manager Pochettino must have seen huge potential to bring him over to the Premier League. The centre-back has been dubbed a ‘mini Alderweireld’ and fans would love it if he develops into a similar player further down the line. Foyth is in the mind of Pochettino and has been on the bench for five Premier League games so far. He doesn’t need to be concerned about his lack of opportunities yet at 19 and the manager has shown he will throw players into the starting XI regardless of their age. Foyth’s attacking background makes him a good fit for Spurs’ defence as he is a comfortable footballer that can play out from defence.
