Newcastle United could try and sign Liverpool left back Andrew Robertson after he held showdown talks about his future with Jurgen Klopp, according to The Chronicle.

The newspaper claim that the Magpies were keen on landing the Scotland international, 23, over the summer but he opted to move to Merseyside instead.

The Chronicle report that manager Rafael Benitez could look to solve his left-back problem by making a January loan move for Robertson.

He has been on the fringes of the Liverpool team since his £8million summer move, making just three appearances in all competitions.

Good move for Newcastle?

Undoubtedly. Robertson had a fine season in the Premier League for Hull and has looked the part in his three Liverpool matches. The problem is that Alberto Moreno’s shock renaissance has killed the Scot’s hopes of nailing down a regular slot. With his defensive nous and dazzling overlaps, Robertson would make a brilliant loan coup for Newcastle, who are missing Paul Dummett and Massadio Haidara through injury.

Likely to happen?

A lot can happen between now and January, and much will depend upon Moreno’s form and how Klopp feels Robertson is adapting to his demands, both in training and during his rare run-outs. Given that James Milner is a super-solid back-up at left-back, a move to Newcastle could well be on the cards.
