Why was Kyle Bartley not adequately replaced?

Injury has prevented Kyle Bartley from building upon his outstanding campaign at Elland Road, and he is not expected to be available again until next month. But that does not end the search for answers as to why the centre-back was not adequately replaced during the summer window. Leeds went for a short-term fix in the shape of Matthew Pennington, who is on loan from Everton. Unlike last season’s centre-half loanees, the 23-year-old has not been a commanding presence.
