Liverpool defender Alberto Moreno has revealed that there were concrete offers to leave the club during the summer transfer window.

The 25-year-old spent the majority of the previous campaign playing second fiddle to teammate James Milner who was deployed in the left full-back role despite being a traditional midfielder.

The Spaniard only made a total of 18 appearances for the Reds last season where he only managed to complete full 90 minutes on two occasions in the Premier League.

The defender’s future at Anfield was put in doubt when manager Jurgen Klopp decided to sign Andre Robertson from relegated Hull City in the summer.

However, Moreno has produced some impressive performances at the start of this season and Klopp appears to trust him in the bigger matches.

The full-back has only missed three matches in all competitions this season and he has even demonstrated his attacking capabilities, contributing three assists so far.

Speaking in an interview with IBTimes UK, Moreno revealed that he had the chance to leave Merseyside in the summer but he is delighted that he remains a Liverpool player.

“It’s true there were a lot offers at the end of the season but my intention was always to stay at Liverpool,” he said.

“Klopp was very honest. He couldn’t promise me anything and told me that they were going to sign a new left-back [Robertson].

“But I wanted to play for Liverpool. It’s a great club and I could see myself playing here.

“Honestly, right now I do not think about anything, not about signing a new deal not about moving somewhere else.

“I only think about playing, keep doing what I am doing and whatever has to come in the future will come.

“I only think about the day to day and the game to game. Nothing else.”

OPINION

Given the lack of game time he experienced last season, it was certainly a shock to see Moreno putting on the red shirt at the start of this campaign. It was even more of a surprise when Klopp decided to give him a chance in his natural position and so far, the Spaniard has not let him down. Moreno deserves a lot of credit for the way in which he has reinvented himself at Anfield and although there are still flaws in his game, it is refreshing to see that he wants to continue growing and improving at the club. It was a very open and honest interview and it’s the kind of piece which will help the Liverpool fans become more patient with him for the foreseeable future.
