Newcastle United are keen to sign a new goalkeeper in January, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claims that the Magpies boss Rafael Benitez has identified two shot stoppers ahead of the winter transfer window and is determined to splash out on a new number one.

It is understood that La Liga star Geronimo Rulli is on the club’s radar after impressing Newcastle scouts during his performance for Real Sociedad.

Rulli, 25, is valued at £15million by the Spanish outfit and previously had a spell at Manchester City where he failed to make an appearance.

Meanwhile, the report details that Galatasaray goalkeeper Fernando Muslera has also been scouted by the North East club and is priced at £8million.

The 31-year-old has made 253 appearances for the Turkish giants and has 94 international caps for Uruguay.

Good move for Newcastle?

Benitez seems determined to bring in a new goalkeeper to St James’ Park in January and that may seem a tad harsh given the form of current number one Rob Elliot.

He has helped Newcastle reach sixth in the league table with some brilliant performances and the 31-year-old has reached new levels this season.

However, the two goalkeepers on Benitez’s shortlist both look very impressive and that they could be great additions to the Premier League.

Rulli has become a proven performer in La Liga with Sociedad and looks prepared for another crack at the Premier League.

He is valued at £15million and should be the number one target ahead of the experienced Muslera, with a six-year age swing between them.

Newcastle would only be strengthening their squad by brining in a top-class goalkeeper like Rulli and show their intentions in the Premier League.

Likely to happen?

Newcastle look set to bring in a new goalkeeper for the second half of the season as Benitez gets his wish despite the turnaround of Elliot.

Muslera is a long-term servant of Galatasaray and appears to be the more unlikely of the deals for just £8million, but the temptation of the Premier League is on offer.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Rulli appears to be a more likely alternative as he has already tried one taste of English football before and the Argentinian is in good form.
